World Golf Hall of Fame member Ernie Els has proven his character and sportsmanship both on and off the golf course. From his Els for Autism Foundation and development of junior golf in his homeland of South Africa, to his four Major Championship victories, Els continuously shows his dedication to improving the game of golf and the wellbeing of humanity. The PGA TOUR and Southern Company have recognized those values, naming Els the 2015 Payne Stewart Award recipient.

The Payne Stewart Award is presented annually to a professional golfer who best exemplifies fellow Hall of Fame member Payne Stewart’s steadfast values of character, charity and sportsmanship. The PGA TOUR created the Payne Stewart Award in his honor, a year after his passing.

“I have so many fond memories of Payne and always had the greatest respect for him as a golfer and as a person, and I think this award is a wonderful way to honor his memory and the values that he stood for,” said Els. “To be considered worthy of receiving such an award makes me feel proud and very humble. It really means a lot.”

Known as “The Big Easy” for the effortless swing the 6-foot 3-inch South African produces, Els continues to have a thrilling golf career, capturing more than 60 career titles. But what may be more significant is his impact on those around him. Els’ work with the Ernie Els & Fancourt Foundation and the Els for Autism Foundation has changed the lives of hundreds of children and adults.

Els will be honored September 22 at the TOUR Championship by Coca-Cola in Atlanta. The ceremony will be televised live on Golf Channel as part of a “Golf Central” special from 7-8 p.m. EST.
