Captained by World Golf Hall of Fame Member Juli Inkster, the United States edged Europe 14½ – 13½ in dramatic fashion and regained the Solheim Cup trophy in St. Leon-Rot, Germany.

Trailing by four points going into the singles format, Paula Creamer capped the U.S. team’s rally with a defeat of Germany’s Sandra Gal. It was the biggest comeback and the narrowest margin of victory in the 14-year history of the Solheim Cup.

The rally was led by American Cristie Kerr, who recorded nine birdies in 11 holes en route to a 3 & 2 victory over Charley Hull. Michelle Wie’s game also shined as she shot a 30 on the front nine during her 6 & 4 win over Swedish Caroline Hedwall.

The comeback was complete when Gerina Piller (finishing with a 3-0-1 record) sank a 10-foot birdie putt to put away Caroline Masson, while Angela Stanford held off Suzann Pettersen with a par on 17 to win 2 & 1.

“You’ve got to play with fire in your belly,” said Juli Inkster. “My team played so damn good out there. They just never gave up. It was just amazing.”

Inkster became the eighth U.S. Hall of Fame Member to captain a victory over Europe and the first since Beth Daniel in 2009.

The biennial Solheim Cup will return to the United States in 2017, when the Des Moines Golf & Country Club will host the three-day event.
