"In their own words"

On the eve of the inaugural Solheim Cup, Pat Bradley anxiously watched from the Lake Nona Clubhouse as the Space Shuttle Atlantis was preparing to blast off. The methodical countdown seemed full of calm from the outside as onlookers awaited the eruptive power and awe that kicked off the mission.

Bradley found herself in the role of Atlantis the next morning - Nov. 16, 1990 - as she waited six minutes to tick off and the clock to strike 10:10 a.m., which would signal her hitting the first shot in Solheim Cup history.

"Heck," Bradley said, "it's like waiting for the Space Shuttle to go."

From the leaderboard's viewpoint, the inaugural Solheim Cup wasn't much of a competition. The U.S. team featured the likes of Nancy Lopez, Pat Bradley, Betsy King, Beth Daniel, and Patty Sheehan - all close to their prime - against European players who had a fraction of their major championships success, Tour titles or professional experience. The U.S. utlimately won USA 111/2 - 41/2.
